Short video on Elders in the church, by Dr. Voddie Baucham (and some of my thoughts)
There’s a difference between a ‘healthy’ church, and a ‘Biblical’ church. A ‘healthy’ church will be (including but not limited to), a disciplined church, a church that disciples each other, an accountable church, a church with a membership, a small church, a church the prays often with each other, an expository / exegetical teaching church, a church that ‘sends-out’ and Biblically evangelizes it’s community, etcetera etcetera etcetera.
However a ‘Biblical’ church will be Elder led, and will have a “Plurality of ‘Elders,” a minimum of three (including the pastor) is most appropriate. And what used to be a needless to say, has become a need to say. That their Leaders, Administrators, or Elders must be men. As Dr. Voddie Baucham says, “And so the idea here, is that the church is led by a group of men. And yes I did say men!”
Albeit Biblical Elders is a must, they must first and foremost meet a Biblical criteria. Then they must be men that are God pleasers, not just pastor pleasers, or congregation pleasers. Dr. Baucham recently shared at a conference, whereas his Elders voted against him on a matter. Voddie did not want his “weekly sermons up on Sermon Audio,” but his Elders “out voted” him. Though that issue is non-essential, it is still important to have a plurality of Elders.
