Dr. Voddie Baucham on Calling Out False Teachers By Name, by ReformedWiki
Sadly, today perhaps a majority of professing Christians believe it is wrong to call out false teachers by name. In the below video ReformedWiki did an excellent job while using excerpts from Dr. Voddie Baucham to Biblically defend naming names. This is encouraging as I am currently teaching through the Epistle of Jude, and have called out names while contending for the faith (vs. 3).
When the subject arises, and the time was appropriate, I have warned some brethren that Todd Friel teaches against the important doctrine called Original Sin. One became extremely upset and rebuked me for identifying the name Todd Friel. It was clear this person was a huge fan and literal follower of Friel. Soteriology is an essential doctrine, and the doctrine of original sin gives us an even clearer soteriological examination.
Nonetheless, today we live in a world where some professing Christians have too high a view of man, and if you step on their idols, they will fight back, and sometimes bite back. Biblical apologetics, or contending for the faith is not defending your favorite celebrity pastor at the expense of sound doctrine, that is pastoral idolatry. Biblical apologetics, or contending for the faith will in fact reveal idols in our lives (myself included – ouch!). That is why I am no longer a fan or follower of no man except the Man Christ Jesus. And yes, I do appreciate all the men of His Scriptures, and many that have proceeded us in death, and some living today. But to Him be the glory. In regards to idolatry, Paul warned the church in 1 Corinthians 10:12-14,
“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
