The song Hallelujah is not a “Christian” song

A little Los Angeles history and how it became closely associated with contemporary music and a pseudō church history in this regard.

Today this song Hallelujah is played on “Christian radio” and sung in many “churches.” But what most don’t realize is that the one who wrote and first produced this song was not a Christian, it was the late Leonard Cohen below. Cohen later became closely associated with the infamous record producer – songwriter Phil Spector. Spector was later arrested in Los Angeles for murder and convicted, and he died in 2021. In 2016 Cohen died in Los Angeles.

This song has slightly changed over the years. Originally sung by a masculine man. Today this song is sung mostly by ladies, emasculated men, heretics like Hillsong Worship, and/or people from other faiths, including the worldly Rock n Roll star Bon Jovi.

What’s the moral of my story? According to the world’s standards, this song might seem beautiful to some, but I think it’s important to understand the importance of limiting our singing in church to the Psalmody – the singing Psalms from the book of Psalms or the Psalter, and Hymns from a hymnal.

Christ did not die for a genre. He didn’t die for Christian music, Christian movies, Christian radio, Christian companies etcetera. He only died for His elect. A Biblical church will not emulate the world. Lest it become part of the emergent church movement.

Lastly, practicing a regulative principle of worship is the only Biblical method.

Note: I was going to write more about this, but our ‘tornado watch system’ just went off as I write this. So, I need to go to the EmComm room to do a preliminary assessment. It’s important to be weather-aware and prepared, not scared.
